An Advanced Placement English course gives students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies (and possibly earn college credit) while in high school. Students will engage in the careful reading and analysis of literature. The course will concentrate on works of recognized literary merit. In response to the readings, students will be expected to participate in thoughtful discussions and write critical analyses. Emphasis will be placed on helping students develop

stylistic maturity characterized by: a wide ranging vocabulary; a variety of sentence structures; a logical organization; a balance of generalization with specific illustrative detail; and an effective use of rhetoric. Students will be required to purchase supplemental books. Students who enroll in the program will have the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement Examination in May. Currently, the fee for this examination is $82.00. AP Eng. 12 may be taken by students who earned A’s and B’s in Honors English 11.
