0423 Newspaper Production 1 year Grades 10, 11, 12 1 credit
This challenging, but rewarding elective can help students gain entry into college or earn an academic scholarship since colleges are impressed by participation in high school journalism. Students must be capable of working independently and must possess strong English skills. Students are responsible for all aspects of producing a publication and running a small business including brainstorming of ideas, interviewing, writing, editing, revising, proofreading, photography, planning, layout, design, graphic art, advertising sales, advertising design, fundraising, and accounting/bookkeeping. Word processing and other computer/technological skills are essential. Grades are given based on student performance and participation. During the layout process of each issue, students will be REQUIRED to spend some time outside of class. Recommendation of current and past English teachers and the successful completion of an application are required to gain entry in the class. Class size is limited. Applications are available in the principal’s and guidance offices.
